The Story Behind the Floors
Nearly two decades,
one simple idea.
Nearly two decades ago, I picked up a floor sander for the first time. I was working for someone else, learning the trade the only way you can — by doing it. Hours of sanding. Watching how wood responds to different grits. Learning why some finishes work and others fail.
And somewhere in those hours, I fell in love with the work. There's something honest about it. You start with a worn, scratched, tired floor. You put in the hours. When you're done, there's this beautiful surface that changes the whole feel of a room. You can see exactly what you accomplished.
Colorado was the training ground.
By 2006, I knew enough. I'd made my mistakes — on someone else's floors, thankfully — and learned from every one of them. Hundreds of homes. Thousands of floors. Each one teaching me something about wood, about finishes, about people.
That's when KZ Wood Floors started. The name, the business, the promise that every floor would leave better than we found it.
“Wood is alive. It breathes with humidity, expands in summer, contracts in winter. After nearly two decades, I know how it responds.”
Why Charlotte.
Charlotte felt right from the first visit. A city that's growing but still has roots. Historic neighborhoods with beautiful old homes — many with original hardwood floors that needed attention. New construction going up everywhere. Families moving in daily who care about how their homes look and feel.
So we made the move. Same skills. Same standards. New community to serve.
What we believe.
I've seen how some contractors work. Show up late. Cut corners when no one's watching. Quote one price, charge another. Leave a mess and move on. That's not how I was raised, and it's not how I run this business.
When I'm in your home, I treat it like my own. I show up when I say I will. I do the work right — not just the parts you can see, but all of it. When I'm done, your house is clean. Your floors are beautiful. No surprises on the bill.
It's not complicated. It's just doing what you say you'll do, and doing it well.
The craft is in the details.
Good tools matter. We use professional-grade sanders that create flat, consistent surfaces — not the rental machines that leave waves and swirls. Quality brushes and applicators for finishes that go on smooth and even. But tools are only part of it. Knowing how to use them — that's what makes the difference.
The corners. The edges. The transitions between rooms. The spots behind doors. These are where shortcuts show up. We don't take shortcuts.
Charlotte is home now.
We're not a franchise. There's no call center routing you to whoever's available. When you call KZ Wood Floors, you get us. We're building our reputation here, floor by floor, home by home. Every job is a chance to show what we can do.
Do great work. Treat people right. Let the results speak for themselves.
That's how good businesses grow.
