Serving Weddington, NC & Surrounding Areas
Weddington's custom homes deserve craftsman-quality floors. From Chatelaine to Providence Downs and Firethorne, KZ Wood Floors handles wide-plank installs and high-end refinishing throughout Union County.
Weddington is home to some of the largest and most beautiful custom-built houses in the Charlotte region. Homeowners here know quality when they see it — and expect the same from every trade that walks through the door. We've installed wide-plank hardwood in custom builds, refinished original floors in established estates, and handled repair work that restores floors to like-new condition.
Big Weddington homes often feature wide-plank engineered or solid hardwood throughout. The scale and quality of these installations demands precision — tight seams, consistent finish, and respect for the home during the work. That's exactly how we operate.
WeddingtonClimate & Hardwood
Weddington is in northwestern Union County, about 15 miles southeast of Charlotte. Climate is humid subtropical with hot humid summers, mild winters, EPA-recommended 30-50% indoor RH range. The town is known for its large-lot estate character, with most homes on lots of 1+ acre. The bigger home sizes (often 4,000-7,000+ sq ft) and the open layouts typical of luxury construction can drive larger seasonal humidity swings inside the house, especially on homes with significant glass area.
On larger Weddington homes with site-finished solid hardwood, a whole-house humidification and dehumidification system tied into the HVAC is the long-term floor-care investment. The cost is small relative to the floor's replacement cost. Homes with engineered hardwood handle the swing better, but humidity control is still the right move on any premium hardwood install.
WeddingtonHome Eras & Original Floors
Weddington's character is luxury new-build estate housing on lots of 1+ acre. The median home was built in 2000, with 22.8% of homes built 2000-2009, 22.4% built 2010-2019, and 3.8% built since 2020. Almost the entire town is single-family homes; the high-density mixed-use that defines other parts of the metro is essentially absent. Notable subdivisions include Highgate (luxury custom estates, primarily built 2006-2016, 4,000-7,000+ sq ft), Lake Forest Preserve (wooded estate lots near Tilley Morris Road, built primarily 2006-2014, 3,800-6,000 sq ft), The Falls at Weddington, Twin Lakes, Beulah Oaks, Atherton, Bromley, and Hadley Park. There's no traditional historic downtown or commercial core. Weddington's growth pattern has been almost entirely post-1990 master-planned estate development.
Common original floor types
Solid 3/4-inch hardwood with site-finishing is the most common premium spec on Highgate and Lake Forest Preserve customs, typically white oak in wide-plank widths. Engineered hardwood appears on 1+ acre estates where the homeowner wants the dimensional stability. Heart pine is rare to absent. Hickory and walnut show up on higher-end customs. LVP is common in lower levels and basements.
Different parts of Weddingtonhave different histories — and different floors. Here's what we typically find in each.
Luxury custom estates primarily built 2006-2016. Homes typically 4,000-7,000+ sq ft. Floor stock skews custom solid hardwood with site-finishing, increasingly white oak in wide-plank widths. The home sizes absorb longer install timelines without disrupting daily life.
Wooded estate lots near Tilley Morris Road. Homes 3,800-6,000 sq ft, built primarily 2006-2014. Architectural style emphasizes traditional with Craftsman and Colonial Revival influences. Floors are predominantly site-finished solid hardwood.
Additional luxury communities in Weddington's estate-housing inventory. Build era spans 1990s through current. Floor stock varies by lot size and home era, with site-finished solid hardwood common in the larger customs.
Smaller-scale luxury subdivisions within Weddington. Build era post-2000. Floor stock is a mix of solid and engineered hardwood depending on the specific home and original spec.
Real questions from Weddington homeowners — answered straight.
On a Highgate-tier custom, white oak with wide plank (5-7 inch) and site-finishing is the most common premium spec we install. Quartersawn white oak gives the most stable expansion behavior, which matters on the larger floor areas these homes carry. Hickory shows up occasionally for owners who want more grain variation. Walnut is gorgeous but softer than oak and shows wear faster in active households. We walk through species samples on your actual subfloor at the estimate so you can see grain in your light.
Refinish, almost certainly. 2007 site-finished solid oak floors typically have plenty of wear thickness left for a full sand-and-finish even after 17-18 years of use. Site-finished floors have the advantage that the next refinish runs the same process as the original install, just on aged wood. We sand down through the existing finish (NWFA grit progression 36 → 60 → 80 → 100), apply your choice of stain, and finish with 2-3 coats of Bona Traffic HD. Total project usually 5-7 days end-to-end including cure time.
On a 4,500 sq ft floor area, a full refinish typically runs 7-10 days. The sanding phase takes longer because of the larger area; the finish coats take the same time per coat but cover more surface; cure time is the same. We run the project in zones so you keep some living space available throughout the project rather than displacing entirely. Most owners in homes this size find it easier to plan a stay elsewhere for the heaviest sanding days only.
On Weddington estate homes, yes. The combination of larger interior volume, more glass area, and longer floor runs makes seasonal humidity swings more pronounced than in smaller homes. A whole-house humidification and dehumidification system tied to the HVAC keeps indoor RH steady at 40-50% year-round, which is the comfort and floor-protection sweet spot. The cost of the system is a fraction of the floor's replacement cost.
Weddington is about 15-20 miles southeast of central Charlotte and 25-35 minutes via NC-16 outside of rush hour. We serve Weddington on the same routes and pricing as nearby cities. The estate-housing scale sometimes means longer project timelines than smaller homes, but travel cost isn't a factor in pricing.

Weddington in the Wider Metro
Weddington is the luxury estate corner of Union County. North into Mint Hill, housing density picks up and lot sizes drop. East into Indian Trail and Stallings, the housing pattern shifts to fast-growing commuter subdivisions on smaller lots. South into Monroe, the Union County seat brings deeper historic stock that contrasts with Weddington's almost-entirely-post-2000 character. West into Matthews and Charlotte, the housing rhythm is mostly mid-century and 1990s-2010s suburbs.
